Speaking on Good Morning Britain today, Simon Cowell said One Direction needed to take time off to recuperate, and decide "what they want to do next". "Their schedule after five years was unbelievable."
"It's not until they stop, that's going to be when they're going to realise how tired they are. And then they're going to decide what they want to do next.
"I don't think any of them have got a plan right now."
Simon also spoke about coping with the death of his mother. Admitting Julie would have been disappointed for his angry reaction to getting the Overs category - which saw him swear and rant in front of the contestants.
"I actually think she would have given me a whack," he joked.
Speaking about the pain after losing her, he said he still feels her presence.
"I deal with it because I always believe she's still here," he told GMB. "It's the same with my dad. I always feel their presence.
"Once you get over that initial shock then you deal with it in a different way."
Simon denied the rumours Louis Walsh is set to return, but admitted he likes the idea of a guest judge.
"He's like the ghost," Simon said. "When he was on the show I would always have people complaining about him. Now he's gone it's like 'why isn't he there?' I don't know what's going to happen."
Simon was full of praise for newbies Rita Ora and Nick Grimshaw, but admitted he doesn't know if they'll be back - adding: "I don't even know if I'll be back next year."
